Brilla is Expanding!

Dear Community,

I am excited to inform you that the Brilla Charter School Network is growing within NYC and beyond!
We just opened two new elementary school in the Bronx and we’re planning to expand to Paterson, New Jersey.

Our first elementary school opened in Mott Haven in 2013. We opened our second elementary school, and our first middle school in 2017. In the Fall of 2020 we opened two more elementary schools University Heights. Today, our five Bronx schools are serving 1,350 K-8th grade students.

We will open our second middle school in the Fall of 2022 and two more middle schools in the Fall of 2025 in the Bronx. We plan to open our first elementary school outside of NYC, in Paterson, New Jersey in the Fall of 2022, pending approval of our charter.

At full enrollment, we anticipate educating 3,200 students across eight schools in the Bronx and even more in New Jersey. Our desire to open more schools stems from the high-quality academic results that our existing network schools have demonstrated in their seven-year existence:

of Brilla students, in 2019 were proficient on the state ELA exam compared with 46% of their state peers, 48% of their city peers and 32% of their CSD7 peers.

62^%

of Brilla students, in 2019 were proficient on the state Math exam compared with 50% of their state peers, 48% of their city peers and 29% of their CSD7 peers.

Brilla students ranked 3rd in the state in Math and in ELA compared to other schools serving a similar demographic.

75% of Brilla students demonstrated exceptional academic growth on the NWEA exam in ELA as compared to 50% of their peers nationally.

82% of Brilla students demonstrated exceptional academic growth on the NWEA exam in Math as compared to 50% of their peers nationally.

With many students on our waiting list, and relatively few quality seats in the Bronx and Paterson, we believe we have a moral obligation to offer our model to more children.

While these results are impressive, they do not speak to the other reasons that Brilla is a great school option for many families in the Bronx and Paterson. We work tirelessly with our families to educate the whole child to be prepared for success in high school, college, and beyond. There is a culture of joy, of becoming the best version of oneself and caring (“la caridad”) that radiates throughout all of our campuses.
